May Events Roundup
Part of our Learn with the League series.
LWVSP’s Learn with the League event series seeks to educate League members and the general public on important policy issues affecting St. Paul residents, Minnesotans, and the nation.
On Sunday, May 31, LWVSP’s Community Education Committee (formerly the Program Committee) hosted a webinar entitled “Mining in the BWCA: What Could Possibly Go Wrong?” as part of its Learn with the League event series. Approximately 40 listeners streamed the event live. They heard from Julie Lucas, the Executive Director of MiningMinnesota and Ingrid Lyons, the Executive Director of Save the Boundary Waters, to discuss the complexities of copper mining and related policy issues in northern Minnesota.
The Community Education Committee selected the topic due to major legislative decisions in Washington, D.C., about mining leases in our state. The speakers addressed the challenges and opportunities presented by the lifting of the mining ban in the Boundary Waters watershed. Listeners left with an understanding of both sides of the issue, as well as an appreciation for the respect that both Julie and Ingrid brought to their engagement with each other on a charged issue.
