Taking Action to Drive Change

The League of Women Voters of St. Paul is powered by its members who turn ideas into action. Most of that work happens through our committees—focused groups that dive deep into specific initiatives, issues, and projects. Committees are where members connect with others who share their interests, learn new skills, and take positive action in our community.

Whether you’re passionate about voter turnout, local advocacy, or keeping our organization strong, there’s a place for you. Each committee is led by members who welcome new voices and perspectives. LWVSP is dedicated to cultivating new leaders, and committee work is an excellent way to build leadership skills. You don’t need prior experience to get involved.

Take a look at the active committees below to see what fits your interests. If something sparks your curiosity, reach out—we’d love to have you join the conversation.

Advocacy Committee

The purpose of the Advocacy Committee is to champion the League of Women Voters’ public policy positions (as defined by the League’s 2024-26 Impact on Issues guide) and to adapt and apply them to Saint Paul and Ramsey County. Though the League emphasizes democracy and elections, it also holds policy positions on many issues, such as basic human needs, education, environmental issues, healthcare, housing, and immigration. To learn more or join the committee, please contact Co-Chairs Nona Beining and/or Patrick Finnegan at advocacy.lwvsp@gmail.com.

Membership Committee

The Membership Committee builds cohesion and community between LWVSP members. Membership Committee tasks include welcoming new and thanking renewing members; connecting members to programs and committees; surveying membership talents, experience and requests; and hosting the Annual Dinner Meeting in June and the December Holiday Luncheon. To join the committee or learn more, please contact Co-Chairs Molly Flowers and/or Heidi Kloempken at lwvstpaul@lwvmn.org.

Program Committee

The Program Committee develops public educational events, including the Learn with the League event series. Members of the committee complete many tasks to make our regular events successful, including: identifying topics, speakers, and locations; creating marketing materials and notifying press about upcoming events; and developing and/or picking up materials for events. Having a dedicated committee makes our events run smoothly, and each volunteer can help in small or big ways. To join the committee or learn more, please contact Co-Chairs, Cheryl Bailey and/or Melissa Finnegan

Voter Service Committee

The Voter Service Committee is LWVSP’s primary voter outreach vehicle. Committee members help get out the voter by registering voters (including pre-registering 16- and 17-year-olds); producing and disseminating voter education materials; and educating the public on candidates and ballot measures. In addition to tabling at community events and presenting in classrooms, Voter Service Committee volunteers also coordinate local candidate forums for St. Paul. To join the committee or learn more, please contact Co-Chairs Pamela Mercier and/or Chris Schnieders at voterservice.lwvsp@gmail.com.

Inter-League Partnerships

In addition to working through its committees, the League of Women Voters of Saint Paul participates in a number of inter-League initiatives, including:

  • Advocacy and Program Action Team (APAT) (statewide for Minnesota)

  • Council of Metropolitan Area Leagues (CMAL) (Twin Cities metro area)

  • Ramsey County Advocacy Team (RCAT) (consisting of representatives from all four Ramsey County Leagues)

  • LWV Upper Mississippi River Region (UMRR)
