Voter Service Committee Meeting
May 3, 1:00 - 3:00 p.m.
Sun Ray Library
2105 Wilson Avenue, St. Paul, MN 55119

The Voter Service Committee invites interested League members to join us for a special presentation, “Voting in the Community.” Our two speakers are Social Work graduate students from the University of Minnesota who will cover methods of inclusive engagement for all people in the voting process.

Attention Voter Service volunteers: please watch your email for opportunities to participate in tabling events throughout the summer. Many organizations are requesting that we bring our knowledge and enthusiasm to public events that provide opportunities for voter registration and education. The time to spread the word on civic engagement is now! We hope you will join us in these rewarding experiences. To get on the Voter Service volunteer email list, contact Chris Schnieders or Patty Yunk, Voter Service Co-Chairs, at voterservice.lwvsp@gmail.com.

The next Voter Services Committee meeting will be on July 7, 5:30 -7:30 p.m., at the Merriam Park Library. The key topic of discussion will be voting by mail.

Mining Near the BWCA: What Could Possibly Go Wrong?
May 31, 1:00 - 2:00 p.m.
Zoom (Registration required)

Mineral withdrawal near the BWCA was banned in 2023 after the U.S. Forest Service's 2022 study showed mining was unsafe in the Rainy River watershed, which flows to the BWCA. On April 16, 2026, the Senate passed MN Rep. Pete Stauber's bill to repeal the ban, and Chilean-owned company Twin Metals Minnesota, LLC can now resume its attempt to mine copper and nickel, metals we all use in our daily lives.

The program will feature Ingrid Lyons, Executive Director of Save the Boundary Waters, and Julie Lucas, Executive Director of MiningMinnesota. Both speakers have deep knowledge of the complicated geologic, economic, and political issues about mining in Northern Minnesota and have worked hard to inform the public about the implications of lifting the mining ban.
